Judge denies Kellen Winslow Jr. bail with bizarre reasoning

Kellen Winslow II to stand trial on multiple sex crimes in California

The 2004 Browns first-round pick has already been charged with multiple rapes of middle-aged women in California. Prosecutors say the assaults took place in a three-month span from March to early June.

Below is all you need to know about the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft, including how it works and which players are eligible for selection.

The Supplemental Draft is similar to a silent auction. Each NFL team is able to place a bid privately to the league office using next year’s NFL Draft picks as currency. The team with the highest bid (highest round of the pick bid) on a given player is awarded that player, and the team loses the draft pick it bid. If two teams bid the same draft round, then the league uses a predetermined order to settle the winner.

The predetermined draft order is a three-tiered system: teams with five or fewer wins from last season; teams with more than five wins but did not make the playoffs last season; and playoff teams from last season. Each group undergoes a lottery system with an increased probability for teams with lesser records.

Jerome Bettis has some advice for Le’Veon Bell and the Steelers.

The Hall of Fame rusher thinks it’s time for the two sides to come together to agree on a long-term contract.

Neither one of you are as good by yourself as you are together, Bettis told TMZ Sports on Tuesday.

Again, it was divine. And that should have been the end of it. But then Tavares wrote, To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I should include this next part, and he very much shouldn’t have because it was, no joke, roughly 1,000 words about how much the Toronto Maple Leafs mean to him.

That’s the coda to his heartfelt goodbye to Islanders fans.

It’s like buying the most poetic and beautiful Mother’s Day card, signing your name, adding, To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I should include this next part, and then writing another card and a half’s worth of text about how much better your new stepmother is.

The Cavs went for it right away after LeBron came back, dealing away Andrew Wiggins (and Bennett) for Love

That does not mean those picks were worthless. Pascal Siakam, Dejounte Murray, and Malcolm Brogdon all went among the 10 picks after Korkmaz. Giles could have been OG Anunoby. Swanigan could have become Kyle Kuzma or Josh Hart. Picks are always liquid on the trade market.

You know what? Who cares? The Cavs won a freaking championship, and Love was a huge part of it. Wiggins wasn’t ready. Nobody is dying to pay his new max contract.

Yeah, the Cavs went a little overboard with present-for-future moves. It was clear at the time that two first-rounders — even in the 20s — was an overpay for Mozgov. They lavished Thompson and Smith with fat new deals after long standoffs, even though neither (especially Smith) had much of a market at those salary ranges.

What, exactly, were they supposed to do? Cleveland had no cap room to replace either. They could rationalize the Thompson deal, knowing he would otherwise hit free agency in the summer of 2016 — when a cap spike gave almost the whole league max-level cap space. Thompson had just helped Cleveland make the Finals when he inked his contract. Smith had just helped them win the whole stinking thing when he signed his. (Remember those two massive 3-pointers in the third quarter of Game 7?) Both had good relationships with LeBron. Both were represented by Klutch — Rich Paul’s LeBron-adjacent agency. LeBron was hopping between one-year contracts, holding the Cavs over a barrel.

Some of my favorite memories as an NFL fan were the moments when a player came along who was so terrifying and electrifying as a punt returner that teams did everything possible to keep the ball out of his hands — and he still toasted everyone.

There was Dante Hall wrecking ankles with two punt return touchdowns and two kick return touchdowns in 2003. Devin Hester racking up 11 return touchdowns in his first two seasons — not to mention that one on the opening kickoff of Super Bowl 41. Even Patrick Peterson returning four punts for touchdowns as a rookie in 2011, including a game-winning 99-yarder in overtime.

Hester’s six total return touchdowns in 2007 is the single-season record. It would so, so much fun to see that kind of drama again. — Adam Stites

Imagine losing almost 20 percent of your career earnings just for doing stupid stuff. That’s exactly what I’d do if I ever won the lottery or somehow came across a trust fund. But neither of those things are actually happening. Vontaze Burfict, on the other hand, doesn’t have to imagine it; he’s living it.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie grabbed headlines in April when he reportedly told other owners behind closed doors that Trump was leading one disastrous presidency.

Trump has often used the controversy stirred by protests during the national anthem inspired by Colin Kaepernick for political gains. In a deposition earlier this year, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reportedly said Trump told him it’s a very winning, strong issue for me and that it lifts me.

Getting ahead of Trump’s attempts to use the NFL as political leverage was a large part of the reason why a new national anthem policy was passed in May.

But the abiding buildup is tiring and burdensome. They are human. No one likes their art, their achievements smeared.

I find the Patriots inside assaults most fascinating.

Football has always been a constant in my life and I’m excited about the unique opportunity to present America’s favorite sport to fans in a new way, said Luck in a league press release. The XFL will create first-class organizations that local cities across the country will be proud of.

Luck brings a wealth of experience from former jobs as the athletics director of West Virginia, CEO of the Houston Sports Authority, and, most recently, the head of regulatory affairs with the NCAA. He is also the father of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck.

As evidenced by chairman Vince McMahon’s strange introductory press conference in January, this league will be different. Featuring eight teams, 40-man rosters and a 10-game season, it will fill the offseason void for football. But it won’t be with flare.

It will not hire players who have arrest records, McMahon said. And it will make sure that all of its players stand for the national anthem, a policy that stands in stark contrast to the NFL. The more family friendly XFL even comes through in the league’s new red-white-and-blue logo, as opposed to ’01’s in-your-face black-and-red one. We want to entertain — that’s what we do, McMahon told The Daily. There are not going to be any politics involved with this thing. We’re not going to have any social issues involved. People want to be entertained. … It’s the entertainment value that sometimes is lost.

What should be the Lakers’ approach to a potential Kawhi Leonard trade?

Pelton: I would be cautious. Yes, the example of Paul George shows that players can be swayed by good experiences with new teams. But George and Leonard are different people in different situations, and the opposite is also true: The Lakers could deal for Leonard and end up losing him anyway, as happened with Dwight Howard. And Leonard isn’t their only option in 2019 free agency, so better for the Lakers to hold on to their young prospects — necessary pieces to complement LeBron and another star.

Snellings: Not at this moment, but they aren’t nearly as far away as one might think. They have four very young but very talented players on roster in Ball, Ingram, Julius Randle and Kuzma. They have the potential to re-sign a (in theory) healthy Isaiah Thomas for what would be an extremely interesting reunion with James, and that would give them more high-level firepower. They could be one superstar trade (Leonard?) or signing (DeMarcus Cousins?) away from making things very interesting.

MacMullan: The Lakers at this exact moment are still pretenders when you whip out that Golden State measuring stick and size up their roster. But that could change in a hurry if a certain two-way star with a cranky quadriceps somehow extricates himself from one of the most revered teams in the league. No Kawhi, no title.

Entertaining extension talks with Love makes sense if the plan is to retool rather than fully rebuild.

The fact that Klay Thompson (free agent in 2019) and Draymond Green (2020) will bypass extension talks this summer does not mean that the pair is eventually leaving in free agency.

Thompson is eligible for a four-year, $102 million extension, roughly $86 million less than what he can sign for in 12 months. While we don’t know if the guard will give Golden State a hometown discount then, he’s not sacrificing that kind of long-term money now.

Because Green is an extra year away from free agency, the forward can add only three years and $71 million to the $36 million left on his contract. As with Thompson, an extension for Green is a non-starter.

Tigers outfielder Leonys Martin left with a sore left hamstring after his bases-loaded bunt single in the fifth brought home Detroit’s first run.

Martin was replaced by Victor Reyes.

Following the game, Gardenhire said Martin would be placed on the 10-day disabled list. A corresponding roster move will be made before Monday afternoon’s series finale.

Castellanos followed with his 13th home run, a shot that bounced off the top of the wall in right. It was his first grand slam since Sept. 8, 2017, also against Toronto.

Castellanos also made a fine catch in right, reaching back to grab Russell Martin’s line drive for the final out of the fourth.

Blue Jays RHP John Axford complied a list of more than 500 songs by Canadian artists and has been playing his mix in the clubhouse all weekend. Axford’s `Oh Canada!’ playlist can be streamed using the online music service Spotify.

There weren’t any homers while the teams combined for 15 runs and 25 hits. But there were nine extra-base hits, including five doubles by the White Sox. Joey Gallo had a two-run triple for the Rangers on a ball that was misplayed in the gap by Engel, the center fielder, and Garcia, who was playing right.

Rougned Odor reached all five times, a career high, with two walks and three singles for Texas. … Soria recorded his second save of at least four outs this season. … Hamels had at least seven strikeouts without a walk for the first time in almost two years. … Garcia’s four hits were a season high, and Abreu matched his best this year with three RBI.

White Sox: LF Leury Garcia left after striking out in the fifth inning with a jammed finger on his left hand. He will re-evaluated Monday.

Rangers: Manager Jeff Banister was noncommittal on the next outing for LHP Martin Perez (right elbow). He’s had two straight scoreless rehab outings. Perez has been on the disabled list since April 30.

Bucs releasing guard J.R. Sweezy Jersey

The Buccaneers aren’t going to spend any more time waiting for J.R. Sweezy to get healthy.

According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Bucs are releasing the veteran guard.

Of course, it’s entirely possible (if not probable) that the league cut the suspension in half simply as part of the effort to make a deal with Winston, pursuant to which he wouldn’t file an internal appeal (or external litigation) and he would in turn control the messaging, in an effort to best conceal the details as to what he did and, in turn, to prevent a #MeToo firestorm that could result in the Buccaneers having no choice but to part ways with him.

So where is the letter that the league sent to Winston explaining the basis for the punishment? You know, the multi-page letter outlining everything he did wrong, signed by an NFL executive?

Then, there’s Jaguars defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, who traveled to Haiti on a humanitarian trip for the second consecutive summer.

The Dareus Foundation donated $125,000 to fund a three-classroom building, which Christ-Roi Primary School of Cammy will name after him.

It is one thing to give money to something and hope for the best; it is quite something else to witness your efforts and see the gratitude and thankfulness of not just the children, but the whole community, for doing what you’re doing, Dareus said, via John Reid of the Jacksonville Times-Union. To receive their blessings and hear their words of appreciation directly was something I could have never imagined several years ago. Their gratitude and happiness was overwhelming and showed me that what I am doing is going to have a tremendous impact on their lives.″

Keyshawn Johnson says there’s something wrong mentally with Jameis Winston

As the Court of Big Shield continues to ponder the fate of Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, the court of public opinion continues to issue verdicts, one pundit and/or former player at a time.

Even though every team wants to win, it’s more important to attract and retain customers. If Winston ever becomes radioactive from a P.R. standpoint, no amount of winning will matter. And the fact that there hasn’t been all that much winning on his watch won’t help him.

Again, Burress might have been remembering his own situation. In 2008, he was coming off an ankle injury, and wanted to sign a new deal before the season to offer himself some protection. He skipped offseason practices, but showed up at training camp and mostly rode a stationary bike until just before the start of the season, when the five-year deal came.

It became about the (other) guys, Burress said. You try to handle your business as you should. I’m really close with a lot of the guys I played with. We were coming off a championship. Sitting down talking with those guys was like, ‘It’s not about them. It’s about us.’ We had a great team back then. Hopefully, those same thoughts go through (Odell’s) mind and he’s able to make the decision to show up and perform.

I hope that he doesn’t let that affect him going into training camp. I say just go pay the guy so they can put all that behind them and everybody goes into a season with a tremendous focus of winning another championship.
